"It's no secret there's been some tension in the neighborhood," said Detroit Police Chief James Craig in the wake of the death of 15-year-old Damon Grimes who was tased while riding an ATV on a residential street last month.
Grimes died after he crashed and now Michigan State Police have suspended patrols in the city's 9th precinct where it happened.
"I support the decision," said Craig.
A spokesman for Michigan State Police says, because of high crime, ten troopers were assigned to help patrol the 9th precinct under their Secure City Partnership.
But a short time after the teenager's death, MSP made the decision to suspend those patrols in order to reevaluate their presence and avoid fueling any hostility.
State police will continue to patrol highways through the city and assist Detroit with their aviation unit. Troopers will also continue to respond for assistance everywhere in the city, including the 9th precinct when called upon.
