Longtime Detroit firefighter David Madrigal was a hero to many. Fellow firefighters looked up to him. Neighbors relied on him. Strangers thanked him.

Known for his generosity and willingness to help others, Madrigal's brutal death has hit his co-workers especially hard.

"Dave would have given them whatever they wanted," said Detroit firefighter Verdine Day.  "This is just sinful.  Somebody doesn't have a heart."

Madrigal was just months away from retirement when his life came to a violent end.  His body was discovered inside his Detroit home by his son, who went to check on his dad after not being able to reach him. The 59-year-old died from blunt force trauma to his head.

Family and friends want justice.  Verdine Day set up a Go Fund Me account to help with reward money.  "Me setting this up might give someone the nerve to go ahead and say, I did see something suspicious."

Madrigal's family is continuing to give in his memory.  His furniture is being donated to families who lost their belongings in a fire.
