Detroit Police Chief James Craig has announced a fun plan to help officers get fit.

“Let’s handcuff obesity,” said Chief Craig.

Tuesday afternoon, the department kicked off a 90 Day Weight Loss Challenge. Chief Craig says he is teaming up with Dr. Reginald Eadie, CEO of Detroit Receiving Hospital, Harper University Hospital, and Hutzel Women Hospitals to get it done.

“This is huge, this is huge not for the DMC, but for the police department,” said Dr. Eadie.  “Secondarily and probably more import because we think that creating a more healthy police force will beget safer communities.”

“There used to be a time in police departments when it was mandatory that you maintain a certain level of fitness. That’s gone,” said Chief Craig.  “In the type of work that we do it’s a necessity.”

According to Chief Craig, there are 185 department employees who have signed up for the challenge and are ready to go.

Tuesday, officers had their weigh-ins as a well as their cholesterol, blood pressure, BMI and vision all checked. They also got their fitness on with some cardio.

Officers participating will get badges showing their progress.

Chief Craig says they will be adding gyms to all the precincts and there is a phase 2 he will be revealing at a later time.
