Our city's first responders came together in Campus Martius to remember those who lost their lives on 9/11.
Detroit Police Chief James Craig said, "I can't help but think about where I was at on that tragic day."
That's something many of us think about on September 11th.
Chief Craig was working for the Los Angeles Police Department that fateful day.
Sixteen years later, he takes this day of prayer as an opportunity to thank Detroit's men and women in blue.
Many city officials and representatives of the city's police and fire department gathered at Campus Martius for a ceremony honoring those who lost their lives in the line of duty..
"I've never lost sight of that morning, that day and each day going forward," he explained. "I think about our first responders here. The 11 that have either been shot or killed in the line of duty since September of 2016."
September 11th has become a day of patriotic pride, a reminder that there is no such thing as state lines when a tragedy hits the US.
"If it happens in LA or New York, it touches us. We are one nation."
Mayor Mike Duggan said, "I'm just watching the television the last few weeks, you look at what the first responders mean to this country."
While it remains a solemn day, it's still a great opportunity to thank those who risk their lives for our community.
"It's a day to remember those who have served us and celebrate what they are doing," the mayor added.
