A Detroit Police officer quickly forged a special bond with two young girls while working a missing persons case.
Deann Robinson was last seen more than a year ago. Her remains were discovered in a vacant home on Detroit's west side on February 29. An ex-boyfriend confessed to her murder, according to police.
Detroit police sergeant Shannon Jones never stopped looking for the young mother after the initial missing persons report was filed.
Jones met Robinson's daughters, Shianne, who is 6 and 4-year-old Sienna, while sharing the difficult news with family members that Robinson had been identified through a DNA match. The next time she saw the children was at a candlelight vigil held in front of the abandoned house.
"They got out of the car and they run right up and hug me," Jones told 7 Action News. "And the first words out of Shianne's mouth was, 'you found my Mom,' and I said 'yes,' and she said, 'and you got the bad guy," and I said, 'yes we did.'"
A make-shift memorial remains at the house on Sturdevant Street today.
"If they didn't have the family that they have taking care of them, I would have adopted them," Jones said.
Initially Jones shared her story in a post on DPD's Facebook page. As part of that post, Jones included a link to the GoFundMe page that was started by an older cousin in hopes of giving the 20-year-old mother a proper burial.
