Detroit Police Officers Association President Mark Diaz is due back in court this morning as he faces charges of malicious destruction of property and reckless driving.

Diaz is accused of driving into a building, or part of it, at the Holly Academy in Holly. He was in his union issued vehicle, and by himself, according to prosecutors.

The incident allegedly happened on Dec. 20, 2016 and caused thousands of dollars in damage.

We've learned the school is just blocks from Diaz's home, and the school refused to comment.

Diaz released this statement to 7 Action News

“We’re surprised there are charges on this, but we’ll definitely work with the justice system to get the matter adjudicated as possible and we’ll cooperate 100%.  I’m very surprised by charges on this."

The 7 Investigators learned exclusively, last summer, DPD's internal affairs division investigated claims that Diaz caused destruction to a hotel on Mackinac Island during the policy conference.

DPD confirms that officers interviewed hotel staff and reached out to Mackinac Island police, but charges were never filed.

He was arraigned on charges in Clarkston and is currently suspended without pay.
