(WXYZ) - Detroit Public Schools are seeking out hundreds of new volunteers to help keep several school areas safe.
They are looking for people to patrol 14 key geographic school areas and also assist already existing patrol groups. DPS said this is one of the first initiatives to be implemented under the district's new comprehensive five-year strategic plan.
The plan also includes improved customer service, other safety initiatives and more arts and music in elementary and middle schools.
Volunteers are being asked to commit a year of patrolling between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. or 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
To volunteer you can call (313) 748-6009. Volunteers will be notified within two days.
Residents are being asked to turn on their porch lights in immediate school areas and to report any crime to DPS Police at (313) 748-6000.
