Detroit sees violent start to 2020 as police investigate several separate shootings

DETROIT (WXYZ) — Detroit Police are investigating several separate shooting incidents that occurred between New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, one of them fatal.

Tuesday, December 31, 2019 at approximately at ‪6:30 p.m. in the area of E. Seven Mile and Riopelle: Police say a victim was attempting to sell a pair of gym shoes to an unknown suspect when the suspect allegedly produced a hand gun. The victim struggled with the suspect, who then reportedly fired his gun, striking the victim. The suspect fled the location. The victim was conveyed to the hospital and listed in stable condition.

Tuesday, December 31, 2019 at approximately 8:40 p.m. on Whitcomb near Greenfield and Joy Road: Police say a 17-year-old boy shot himself after mishandling a handgun he found on W. Chicago. The victim was privately conveyed to the hospital. His condition is unknown.

Wednesday, January 1, 2020 at approximately 2:30 a.m., on Strasburg Street near E. 7 Mile: According to Detroit Police, a 33-year-old female victim was driving on Strasburg in a black 2007 Chrysler when the driver of a dark colored vehicle was driving head-on towards her. After honking her horn to avoid a collision, police say an unknown occupant inside of the vehicle produced a weapon and fired multiple shots, striking her. The dark colored vehicle then fled in an unknown direction. The victim was transported to the hospital for treatment in temporary serious condition.

Wednesday, January 1, 2020 at approximately 3:50 a.m., on Grand River near Schaefer Hwy: A 22-year-old woman was shot after fleeing an alleged kidnap attempt inside the Galaxy Coney Island. Family of the victim tells 7 Action Newstwo men grabbed her and her friend, and tried to drag them out of the restaurant into a white van. Both women were able to get away; the 22-year-old jumped in her car and went to a nearby gas station for help, and that's when family says someone in the white van shot her in the leg. She's expected to be okay. Detroit Police say both of the suspects are men in their 40s who appeared to be intoxicated. One suspect is short, with a medium brown complexion and a beard who was wearing boots. The second suspect is described as having dark complexion and was last seen wearing a black fur jacket. Sources tell Action News some of the assault was captured on surveillance video.

Wednesday, January 1, 2020 at approximately 4:30 a.m. in the area of Puritan and Linwood: Police say two men ages 22 and 30-years-old were at a local gas station when an unknown suspect shot them. The victims were privately conveyed to the hospital for treatment. Both were listed in stable condition.

Wednesday, January 1, 2020 at approximately 4:50 a.m. on Puritan: Officer say a 24-year-old male victim sustained a gunshot wound to body while walking on Puritan (unknown cross street).

Wednesday, January 1, 2020 at approximately 11:40 a.m. on Monica Street off of Livernois: Police say the body of an unidentified man in his early to mid twenties was found in a vacant field with a fatal gunshot wound.
