The city of Detroit and the Detroit Downtown Partnership announced on Thursday they have chosen Shift Transit to be the provider for a bike share system throughout the downtown area.
According to a release, Shift Transit will provide 420 bikes and 42 stations for the city's first public bike share system. It is expected to launch next spring.
The company will provide short-term bike rental with wireless, solar-powered kiosks in the greater downtown area.
“We are one step closer in providing another option for Detroiters and visitors to make their way around the city,” DDOT Director Dan Dirks said in a release. “Bike share will help expand the reach of not only DDOT’s services, but other transit modes as well.”
There have not been specific station locations announced for the bike share program, but beginning this fall, residents, business owners, visitors, property owners and more can provide input on station locations.
They are expected to be in close proximity to other stations like DDOT and SMART bus stops, the People Mover and the QLine.
