Field trips are some of the best parts of elementary school but many students in Detroit don’t get that opportunity.

So, one 4th grade teacher is doing everything she can to get her kids to the Soo Locks.

“I would learn much about the water shed and mostly the environment of the region,” Durfee 4th grader Donovan Edwards said.

His class has done the work, experiments and studied hard in anticipation of their field trip.

“We have just delved into science, we are eating breathing, sleeping, everything is about science,” teacher Mrs. Angelia Mahone said.

Now, her 4th grade class is hoping to raise funds to experience the spender of our Great Lakes first hand.

“I would learn much about the water shed and mostly the environment of the region,” Edwards said.

Much of the trip has already been funded by a nationwide effort spearheaded by Stephen Colbert where celebrities fund teacher’s wish lists.

Now, it’s just a matter of food and lodging.

“This trip is everything to them because they get a chance to be together to be with me and to enjoy the sciences, to enjoy geography to enjoy biology and to learn how it relates to them,” Mrs. Mahone said.

They’ve spent their whole year preparing for this trip in May and 9-year-ol Edwards says he’s prepared.

“Well if people want to ask me questions about the great lakes then I can answer those questions,” he said.

For many, it will be their first time outside the city of Detroit.

“Haven’t been on a field trip that takes you out of town,” he said. “It’s gonna be real, real, real exciting.”

Mrs. Mahone is a determined teacher engaging students who are so close to dreams of experiencing this wonder of engineering and human ingenuity.

“We need the support of the community, we need funds in order to take them to Soo Lock,” she said.
