The Detroit-Windsor tunnel will close every weeknight for renovations beginning this fall for eight months to renovate the tunnel.

The Windsor Star reports that crews will replace an 85-year-old ceiling slab at a cost of nearly $17 million. It's expected the construction will begin in November and wrap up around early June, 2018.

Each weeknight beginning around 9 p.m., the tunnel will close to traffic and reopen just before rush hour at 5:30 a.m. the next morning.

On top of the weeknight closures, the tunnel will close for the full weekend four times during the construction, The Star reports.

The first of the full weekend closures is expected to happen on Nov. 17.

“We will be removing the entire concrete ceiling in the tunnel’s river section and replacing it,” Detroit-Windsor Tunnell President and CEO Neal Belitsky told The Windsor Star. “We hope the project will go as quickly, smoothly and safely as possible. That’s why it will be a full closure and we can’t go one lane (at a time)."

An inspection found that the tunnel was in need of a "full removal and replacement of 4,000 linear feet of the river section of the tube," The Star reports
