DETROIT (WXYZ) — People living near 60-year-old Ardel Hough and his wife were stunned to hear that their 35-year-old son allegedly shot them both early Wednesday morning in their home on Grandview near Eight Mile in northwest Detroit.

Ardel, who once worked for the City of Detroit as a bus driver, was shot twice in the head.

Detroit Police said Ardel's 64-year-old wife pretended to be dead when her son kicked her body to see if she was still alive. And after he left the room, the woman was able to call her daughter who then called 911.

The couple's son, who neighbors said has been living with them for about a year, was upset because he thought they did something to his car.

Neighbors said the son got an old red Honda a few months ago, but spent more time sitting in the parked car than driving it.

Ardel's wife underwent surgery Wednesday and continues to recover at a nearby hospital with relatives by her side.

The son remains behind bars pending charges in the case.
