Two people were shot and injured at a home on the city’s west side on Tuesday in a shoot-out that police say happened because of a garbage can.

Wednesday family members held a press conference to tell their side of the story.

The shooting happened around 6:30 Tuesday night at dual family home on the corner of Kentucky and Buena Vista.

More than 30 shell casings were found at the scene, two people were shot, but both are expected to recover.

Police said the shooting was a neighborly dispute over a trash can that got entirely out of hand

Wednesday, relatives of the shooters said it’s a much different story. They told 7 Action News the shooting started because, originally, someone living in the home fired shots from inside at children playing outside, but no children were hurt.

That's when the other family members were called. When they arrived the-shoot out started.

I'm told two of the shooters have CPLS and they have no criminal records.

"We want the community to know this was a blatant lie. This was not over a garbage can. This was not over a trash can. This was because an adult took a weapon and shot out his window at 4 or 5 little kids and he needs to be arrested for what he's done. He started this situation,” said Pastor WJ Rideout III with Defenders of Truth and Justice.

Detroit police said they are working on filing aggravated battery charges on at least two people, but there could be more charges.
