The FBI is out with its annual report on crime in U.S. cities, and Detroit has moved from number one to number two because of a drop in the number of murders.

The stats are for the year 2017.

The top 5 most dangerous cities are:

  1. St. Louis
  2. Detroit
  3. Baltimore
  4. Memphis
  5. Kansas City

In 2017 the number of murders in Detroit was 267.  This makes 40 per 100,000 residents.

In 2016 the number was 303.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig responded by saying, “It is a work in progress.  I’m not waving the flag of success.”

The Chief added, “The number of persons suffering from mental illness and the impact that has on a reduction.  Some of the violence we see in homicide is individuals who have the inability to handle disputes.”

The Chief says the number of murders and non-fatal shootings are down for 2018.

Mayor Mike Duggan said, “We’re going to keep working hard to bring it down every year to get the city safer.”

Violent crimes listed as murder, rape, and assault and robbery were up slightly in 2017 in Detroit.
