DETROIT (WXYZ) — Judge Paul Borman sentenced former UAW Vice President Norwood Jewell to 15 months in prison, and one year supervised release after that.

He will report for prison the first week of January.

This was a plea deal and the sentencing guidelines were 12 to 18 months.

Jewell and his defense attorney told the judge Jewell got caught up in corruption by people telling him that's how it was done.

US Attorney Matthew Schneider told reporters afterword that's not a defense - to say if everyone else is doing it, so can I.

Mike Booth is president of UAW Local 961 in Marysville and told the judge Jewell betrayed their local in the 2015 contract talks by not keeping a Fiat Chrysler Axel Plant from being sold to a 3rd party ZF company.

Their members will now have to transfer to other UAW plants based on seniority or keep working at lower wages.

The UAW released the following statement on Jewell's sentence:

The sentencing of Norwood Jewell speaks for itself. The UAW's leadership is determined to earn back our members’ trust with our Clean Slate reform agenda and a take-no-prisoners approach at the bargaining table, where we will draw the line on more concessions to an auto industry flush in profits.”
