Utility, government and community officials plan to gather to ceremonially break ground on a solar energy array in Detroit.
DTE Energy CEO Gerry Anderson is scheduled to be joined Friday by Mayor Mike Duggan, U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz and others to kick off construction of the O'Shea Solar Project. The project is expected to generate more than $1 million in tax revenue for Detroit over 20 years and produce enough clean energy to power about 450 homes.
The solar array is expected to be completed by the end of the year. It will be built on a city-owned site on Detroit's west side known as O'Shea Playground that was decommissioned in 2011.
Officials say the project includes development of a two-acre park and playground, worker training and blight removal.
