It was game over for one event that has been part of opening day for years.
Organizers blame the mayor’s office, but city officials say event organizers struck out.
With thousands of people in a party spirit, the tailgate was intended to provide thousands of dollars for the Wayne Westland Firefighter Charity Fund, in memory of Brian Woehlke who was killed in the line of duty 3 years ago, as well as the Great Lakes Burn Camp for kids injured in fires.
But enter the blame game.
The mayor’s office confirms the special event permit process changed this year, enforcing what was in place.
City permits were approved for this tailgate event, but city officials say it had to be dry because organizers failed to get a state liquor license.
Other big events that were planned at the Randolph Street site including Monster Energy BMX Bikes have also been canceled.
Some of the people still followed the event, to give it their support.
The mayor’s office says no other tailgate events were canceled. And the problem over the liquor license was with the state, not the city.
