Lawsuits filed in attempt to block EM Kevyn Orr from filing bankruptcy for Detroit

(WXYZ) - 7 Action News has learned the two Detroit City Employee Pension Systems are now suing to block Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr from going into a Chapter 9 Municipal Bankruptcy.

The lawsuits were filed late Wednesday in Ingham County and are in addition to two other lawsuits filed by current and retired city employees.

The suits are designed to protect the pension funds of 30,000 retired and current Detroit city employees from being cut. The Michigan Constitution protects public employee pensions.

The two funds control $5 billion in assets and are underfunded by $3.5 billion.

The emergency manager has held some discussions over the shortages, but no firm offer has been made, according to pension officials.

No new talks have been held since a series of closed meetings last week.

A hearing on the lawsuits is set for Monday in Lansing.  If a Chapter 9 bankruptcy filing is made before Monday, the lawsuits would be stopped.
