Mubarez Ahmed was released from the Dickerson Detention Facility Thursday pending a new trial after being incarcerated for 16 years.
In 2002 Ahmed was charged with murdering two people in Detroit on February 9, 2001.
For nine years the Innocence Project has been investigating his case.
This week a judge granted Ahmed's release on bail and a GPS tether pending a trial hearing on Nov. 6.
"Shocked," Ahmed said. "Just happy."
"This was, obviously, a very weak case, to begin with," said Innocence Project director David Moran. "It was a single eyewitness who picked Mr. Ahmed out and there was a lot of reasons to be suspicious about that."
Moran said during their investigation they found another suspect and the original witness recanted her testimony.
Ahmed now has two new lawyers going forward to represent him. They hope the charges are dismissed before trial.
