March of Dimes March for Babies walker honored for 40 years of participation in fundraiser

DETROIT (WXYZ) - Thousands of people hit the road today for the March of Dimes' annual March for Babies.
The event is the nation's oldest walk fundraiser for babies. One of the places where it is held is in HInes Park, where a walker was honored for his 40th consecutive year of participation.
Rolland Walt has been participating since the walk was known as Walk America. In addition to walking in this fundraiser, the 88-year-old Farmington hills resident is one of the volunteers in our Call for Action department.
"Rolland has been the heart of the Hines park event since before any of us had a role in organizing it," said March of Dimes Metro Detroit Executive Director Frank D'Angelo in a news release. "It is only with dedicated volunteers and supporters like him that the March of Dimes can continue the work it does, improving the health of our nation's babies."
To honor Walt's decades of participation, the March of Dimes planted a tree near the Hines Park playscape, just south of the Nankin Mills Nature Center. The tree was donated by the Plymouth Nursery.
Funds raised by Michigan's March of Dimes March for Babies help support prenatal wellness programs, research grants, newborn intensive car unit family support programs and advocacy efforts.
