DETROIT (WXYZ) — It is a heartbreaking and horrific case of child neglect. A Detroit mom learned her sentence on Monday for leaving her child without adult supervision in a dangerous house.

The house was in such poor condition her baby fell through a hole in the floor into the flooded basement, where she drowned in sewage.

“Poverty is not an excuse,” said Judge Wanda Evans as she delivered the sentence.

Evans told 27-year-old Dasiah Jordan a mother has a responsibility to make sure her children are safe, regardless of circumstances. It is something Jordan tragically failed to do for her baby, 11-month-old Ca'Mya Davis who died in July 2018.

Jordan stood silent, crying, as she learned her sentence. She will serve one year in jail, followed by four years of probation.

The roommate and homeowner Tonya Peterson is also charged and will learn her sentence Tuesday morning.
