Breanne Jones talked with 7 Action News Friday about the devastating loss of her 5-year-old daughter, Mariah Davis, as she urges people who have firearms to secure them around children in hopes of saving the life of another child.

Early Wednesday morning, Mariah took a revolver that someone left under a pillow and accidentally shot herself in the neck.

Breanne was at work when it happened and we're told the child's father was also not at the house.

Mariah died. Her younger brother and a three-year-old who were nearby were not injured.

Mariah's paternal grandfather said the firearm belongs to his wife. He said it was given to her by her own late father.

The grandmother was babysitting the children when it happened. We're told she had gone downstairs to make something to eat when Mariah picked up the firearm and shot herself.

Wayne County prosecutors will determine which adult, if any, will face any charges in Mariah's death.

Detroit Police offer free gun locks at local precincts. You do not need to present any identification or the firearm to obtain the gun lock.
