The mother of a boy who was mauled and killed by a pack of dogs took the stand Monday facing the dogs owner in court.
The owner of those dogs is on trial for 4-year-old Xavier Strickland’s death. Geneke Lyons who owned the dogs is on trial, facing serious murder charges.
It was a emotional day for the boy’s mother, Lucille Strickland, who had to face him, and give her own account about what happened.
Lucille Strickland had to relive that horrific, devastating day her son was killed all over again as she took the stand.
She was there that day in December when Xavier was attacked by four dogs.
The child was dragged away from his mother as they were walking along Bayliss, on Detroit’s west side and attacked in the backyard of a home owned by Lyons.
When officers arrived, a shot was fired to get the dogs away from the little boy. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Three of those dogs were shot and killed at the scene. The fourth dog was later euthanized.
It is believed the dogs were known to be very dangerous and that the pets had escaped before in the past and had a history of problems in the neighborhood.
Now Xavier’s parents are suing Lyons in a separate civil case. The new lawsuit seeks compensation for his death and Lucille’s injuries. Jurors later heard testimony from investigators who where at the scene after the attack happened.
Lyons is charged with Second Degree Murder, Involuntary Manslaughter, and one count of Possessing Dangerous Animals Causing Death. If convicted he could spend life in prison.
