DETROIT (WXYZ) — At Mumford High School in Detroit students sometimes find the lines to get through the metal detectors and into the building tedious.

“It is a lot of kids coming in, so I am like, oh my God, I have to wait in line,” said Azearie Murry, a high school senior

She and her mom say they have a new appreciation for those metal detectors after they helped catch a student bringing a gun into the school.

“It is very good we have those, because without those we would not have known the student had a gun,” said Azearie.

“It does scare you,” said Corklyn Murry, her mom.

The 15-year-old boy learned at Detroit’s Juvenile Detention Center he is charged with carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a firearm.

Wayne county Prosecutor Kym Worthy says school security guards searched his backpack after a metal detector alarm went off at Mumford High School Tuesday.

They found two unloaded guns, a recreational air soft pistol and a hand gun. They then took him into custody.

The school district sent a letter home to parents saying, “We want to commend the security personnel for exercising our safety protocols and remind families to please ensure you are monitoring your child's behavior, securing weapons at your homes, and randomly checking your child's bag before school.”
