Long time Detroit residents in the Van Dyke/Harper area were sadden to learn about Deontae Mitchell’s murder.

The teenager’s body was dumped in a vacant lot, just off the freeway, and a feet away from their homes.

It’s not the neighborhood it used to be. Lots are littered with debris, vacant houses and empty businesses are abundant.

Neighbors have tried to battle the blight, but it became too big of a job.

Dennis Green told 7 Action News, “You can’t see with all the rubbish, high weeds and overgrown trees. That’s why they dumped the boy over here. Because they can get away with it. That’s not right.”
