Former Detroit City Council member Sharon McPhail has been in disputes over the years.

Today she was in court, fighting to keep the job she’s had for the last six years, operating the Detroit Community School, a private Charter School.

The authorizer of the school, Bay Mills Community College fired McPhail, but she refused to leave and then went on vacation.

Both sides showed up in court today and recessed the hearing, agreeing to talk about a possible settlement for the next two weeks.

Bay Mills had said they obtained a Temporary Restraining Order keeping McPhail off school grounds.  But that was not correct.

Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Craig Strong only set the case for a hearing today.

Attorneys for McPhail would not say if she’ll remain out of school or answer to Bay Mills other claim that the state had imposed fines of more than $200,000 because Mc Phail did not get state certification.

McPhail confirmed to 7 Action News she will stay off school grounds during talks.

In court documents, McPhail's attorneys say she doesn't need to be certified by the state, and Bay Mills had praised her as the administrator.

Morganroth said, “All I know is you attempted to make a resolution that makes sense.”

The charter school has 650 students K-12 and remains open.
