Justin Shields, the head swim coach for Stockholmspolisens IF, a swim team from Sweden, wanted to show his athletes around Detroit Thursday, but a thief ruined much of their visit when they discovered all of their valuables had been stolen.

The team parked their rented van in the parking lot of the restaurant El Zocolo Thursday around 12:30 pm.

When they returned to the van, they found that their expensive swimming gear, wallets, cell phones, a laptop and two passports had been stolen after someone punched out the key lock on the driver's side door.

Detroit Police say they had a rash of thefts from vehicles parked near Mexicantown restaurants in April and May, and officers were able to make arrests.

Members of the team say they wouldn't mind returning to Detroit for lunch or some other occasion. But, next time, like anywhere, they'll remember to take their valuables with them or leave them at home.
