Teachers and parents are meeting to hear about the 2017 budget for Detroit Public Schools.

Several state representatives, along with the emergency manager, are presenting the budget now.

Emergency Manager, Judge Steven Rhodes is presenting what he calls a balanced and realistic budget for the next school year and it means there shouldn't be a question as to whether there will be money to pay the teachers moving forward.

The passage of several legislative issues helped fund the budget. It will total $671.6 million.

According to Rhodes, the budget meets five major priorities of the district: it meets all the financial obligations, balances the budget realistically, supports academic innovation, and improves student safety and facilities.

This has been a long road and many teachers have not approved of the emergency manager's appointment, which is why state reps are also speaking at this meeting.

The meeting will run until 7:00 p.m. it is open to the public, but I’m told this is a hard end time, and will not be open to a lot of public comment.
