Trip to Hawaii causes controversy amidst financial crisis in Detroit

(WXYZ) - Detroit is broke and four members of city employee pension boards are going to Hawaii for training.
The cost of the trip is more than $20,000 and has been approved by both boards.
However, Detroit Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr calls it a monumental lack of judgment and he is reviewing his legal options including possibly removing those board members.
Two are lame duck appointees of Detroit Mayor Dave Bing and two are elected by employees.
A spokesman for the Mayor would not comment on whether the trip is appropriate saying that's a separate decision from the Mayor.
A member of the Detroit Police and Fire Pension Board, Mark Diaz says training is necessary but not in Hawaii.
Detroit has avoided running out of cash by giving both pension boards IOUs and negotiations will get under way this summer to cut a deal on pensions being underfunded - by what could be hundreds of millions of dollars.
7 Action News also checked with public employee pension boards in Wayne, Macomb and Oakland Counties. No members are going.
