Freshmen at Wayne State University will have one less college expense for their first semester.

The Office of the President of Wayne State is testing a program for incoming freshmen, where they will not have to pay for parking during the fall semester.

"Our strategic plan outlines student success as a top focus area," said President M. Roy Wilson. "Parking can be challenging for first-time college students, especially those attending urban institutions. we want to eliminate as many barriers as possible to ensure their successful transition to college life, and this parking program is a step in the right direction."

The purpose for offering free parking is to see if students will have more participation in events and programs as well as more engagement with other students and faculty.

The Free Parking Initiative will be for students that have never attended college before and will cover one semester.

After the fall semester, the Office of the President and parking officials at the university will decide if the free parking will continue.
