Vicious attack by two pit bulls stopped when off-duty police officer shoots the dogs

DETROIT (WXYZ) - A 64-year-old Detroit woman is in critical but stable condition after being mauled in the face and head by two pit bulls out in front of her  home.

It happened on Charles, near Conant and just north of the Hamtramck border. An off-duty police officer saw the attack, stopped and shot the dogs.

The woman has been identified as Jessie Clark. Witnesses were horrified by what they saw.

"The dogs were biting her all over," said one woman who did not want to be identified.

"She was screaming while being mauled," said another neighbor who says those same dogs have chased him before.

The off-duty officer, Tyrone Gray, shot and killed one of the dogs. However, the other reportedly ran into an abandoned school across the street even though that dog had been shot as well.

Officer Gray says in his 15 years on the job, he has never seen anything this horrible.

Police at the Northeastern District says if they find the owner of the dogs, criminal charges are likely.

Meanwhile the family of Jessie Clarke is so grateful to officer Gray. They say they believe he saved her life.
