Parents hatch plan to get 5-year-old's stolen bike back after it popped up for sale on Craigslist

HOWELL, Mich. (WXYZ) - Five-year-old Colton Adkins has his dirt bike back because he had two very good detectives on the case.

"My mom and dad found it," said Colton.

His mother Melissa and his father Mike searched everywhere since someone stole the bike from their barn last Wednesday - even the Internet.

"Non-stop searched Craigslist.  I even joined men's Facebook sites that sell things," said Melissa Adkins.

Colton even asked viewers for help Friday night on 7 Action News at 11.

"Give the bike back to me," pleaded Colton in last night's newscast.

It was early Saturday morning when Melissa's eye finally caught something.

"I was like, it's his bike!" said Melissa.

A seller listed the bike on Craigslist for $500. The person even tried to alter the bike to disguise it by changing it from red to black with spray paint.  But Colton's father knew it was his son's bike moment he saw it.

"Quickly looked at a couple of different pictures and could tell that was it," said Mike Adkins.  Mike enlisted the help of some of their relatives into catching the man and getting the bike back by posing as buyers.

"Just told him that my daughter was looking for a bike for spring," said cousin Kevin Lucas.

The family arranged to meet the seller in the parking lot of a store in Milford and they let the sheriff's department know their plan. A man from Whitmore Lake showed up with a woman, and when they realized it was a ruse to get the bike back they panicked.

"Shocked. He couldn't believe this was happening to them," said uncle Dillon Adkins.

The family made a citizen's arrest and the Livingston County Sheriff's Department took away the suspected thieves.

"He tried to run and we called the police," said Mike.

"I let him know you stole from a 5-year-old," said Dillon.

And Colton finally got his dirt bike back.

"I got happy," said Colton.

Case closed.
