The move into a new home will be delayed for three families in Macomb County after thieves stole furnaces over the weekend.
Macomb County Habitat for Humanity said thieves kicked in the front doors of the homes to gain access to the heating systems.
"We were very close to having these homes all set for a family to purchase and move in," said Dave Tirsell, faith and volunteer relations manager for the non-profit. "They were looking forward to being able to have a decent, affordable home for the holidays and this will set us back."
Habitat for Humanity has been a long time non-profit partner in Eastpointe and 11 communities in Macomb County.
According to Tirsell, two current homes in the county are intended for veterans who served this country.
"It's sad that others are watching and trying to take advantage of that situation," he said.
The organization has a large insurance deductible and funds are not immediately available to replace the furnaces.
Tirsell said he's hopeful that heating and ventilation companies might be willing to help the organization in its time of need.
