Man charged with 10th drunk driving offense after being reported by Burger King drive-thru employees

MACOMB TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WXYZ) - Police say a Macomb Township man is locked up in the Macomb County Jail, accused of drunk driving for the 10th time.

Dennis Thoel was taken into custody Tuesday evening in the area of 23 Mile Road and Gratiot after, police say, they were called by employees at the Burger King at 23 Mile and Vergote.

Officers say the employees told them Thoel appeared intoxicated and yelled obscenities at them as he came through the drive-thru.

Police say that officers who arrived on the scene saw Thoel leaving the parking lot in his 1997 Chevy pick-up. According to their report, Thoel began driving northbound in the southbound lanes of Vergote and then turned westbound onto 23 Mile Road.

Officers say Thoel continued to drive erratically and was unable to maintain a lane. It was at this point that he was pulled over.

Police say that Thoel was then placed under arrest because he smelled of intoxicants, failed field sobriety tests and blew a .20 on a breath test.

Thoel has 9 prior drunk driving convictions dating back to 1976. His most recent came in 2000.

He has been charged with Operating While Intoxicated/3rd offense, and is locked up in the Macomb County Jail on a $25,000 cash bond.
