Police are investigating an accident involving a Michigan State Police trooper.

It happened around 6:15 p.m. at the intersection of M-59 and Gratiot.

The trooper was providing assistance to an ambulance that was transporting a 1-year-old with an amputated limb to the hospital.

The trooper, Macomb County Sheriff's Deputies and Clinton Township police were closing intersections in the path of the ambulance. The trooper, followed by the ambulance, entered the M-59 and Gratiot intersection, where traffic had been stopped.

However, police say the ambulance continued south on Gratiot, instead of turning onto westbound M-59. The trooper then followed the ambulance to continue to assist.

It's at that point that a black SUV entered the intersection and was t-boned by the MSP unit.

Neither the trooper or the driver were injured.

Police say the driver has told them he did not see the ambulance or the police car. He also said he was talking to his boss on Bluetooth through the radio.

The investigation is ongoing and police are reviewing the in car video footage from the trooper's vehicle.

Police have not yet released any information on how the 1-year-old suffered an amputation. The child's condition isn't known.
