A woman is paralyzed after being a victim of domestic violence and more than a year later, the man she says is responsible is still walking free.
The suspect, Ivory Giles, made a brief court appearance on Monday. Giles is charged with assault with intent to do great bodily harm. So far, it’s been a slow process moving this case to trial.
The victim, Irena Khalvachi, is paralyzed. She is confined to a wheelchair and she has limited to use of her arms and legs. Her life changed forever after one fateful night in October of 2014.
Now, she can just reminisce about the things that once gave her life meaning.
"I miss my job, I miss drawing, I miss taking care of my flowers, I can not take care of my grandkids,” said Khalvachi.
She’s now living in a nursing home. She tells 7 Action News, her ex-boyfriend, Ivory Giles is responsible. She said he pushed her down a flight of stairs in a fit of rage and left her there for four hours before calling an ambulance.
"He was screaming and he was mad, so I didn't have a chance to say anything,” said Khalvachi.
Giles is free on bond. Khalvachi said the court process is slow because Giles continues to hire new attorneys. As a matter of fact, he had a brand new attorney during Monday’s court hearing, which delayed his preliminary hearing once again.
He did not want to comment on the case to 7 Action News.
Khalvachi said she wants him punished.
"He does not feel guilt,” she said.
Instead, she said she is the one living with the pain.
"I feel like I'm in the prison all this year and I don't know how long, probably the rest of it, I'll be in prison,” said Khalvachi.
Giles is now scheduled for a new preliminary hearing in Macomb County on January 21 at 9:00 am.
