Michigan State Police say a dirty doctor is behind millions of illegal prescriptions that are contributing to a heroin epidemic.

State police call this guy the #1 prescriber of controlled substances in Michigan, and now they've put a stop to it.

Chopper 7 was over the scene as police raided the office of Dr. Lesly Pompy earlier today.

Inside the Monroe doctor's office where he specialized in pain management, police say the physician prescribed more than a million doses of narcotic pills.

That’s more than anyone else in Michigan in the past year and, even worse, cops say they often ended up on the streets.

"People we have arrested for selling prescription pills are getting those pills from this doctor, so that's once facet of this investigation,” we’re told.

Police tell 7 Action News hundreds of patients were seen each day and many got prescribed opiates they didn't need.

For years, they say, his office in the professional building at Promedica Monroe Regional Hospital and his home in Monroe were both locations where the illegal activities occurred.

The doctor was arrested but later released till charges are filed.

Police remind us all of the seriousness of this case, given the ongoing heroin epidemic plaguing our communities.

"So many people are affected by the heroin and prescription pills, high potential for abuse, prescription pills get diverted onto the streets, that means they are sold illegally,” they tell us. “They become very expensive on the streets and a lot of people turn to heroin which is much cheaper."

Fraud charges could be filed very soon.
