Sheriff's office warns of DTE utility worker impersonator in Monroe County

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office is warning residents about a man impersonating a DTE Energy utility worker in the area.

According to deputies, a homeowner reported the impersonator on Thursday, Aug. 11. The man knocked on the door and identified himself as being a worker for DTE. He told the homeowner that he would be replacing utility lines in the front of the home, but needed to come inside the check the electrical system.

Two other calls about a similar incident happened on Friday. One in Raisinville Township and the other in Monroe Township.

The suspect is described as a white male in his 30s with facial hair and missing front teeth. He is driving a gray or silver SUV. The Sheriff's office says it appears he is targeting the homes of senior citizens.

Residents are warned that all utility workers must have a picture ID and proper credentials. If they don't, do not let them in your home and call the Monroe County Sheriff's Office at 734-243-7070.
