OAK PARK, Mich. (WXYZ) — What does it take to be a motivational speaker? Positive energy? Proven success? Life experience?

A 12-year-old from New York visited an elementary school in Oak Park to talk with students.

Demarjay Smith said, “I’m a motivational speaker. I love to inspire the youth.”

He is hoping to accomplish at the Albert Einstein Elementary School in Oak Park.

Smith is in town promoting the “Lil Three” basketball event scheduled for Saturday. He made time to talk about bullying and reaching for success.

“If you have goals, dreams, aspirations, you can also fight and accomplish those things.”

Bobby Thompson is with the Albert Einstein Elemantary School.

He said, “You could do anything you can put your mind to, no matter the age.”

Thompson was inspired by Demarjay’s attitude and thought he could be a good influence on the students.

“Like a win-win for us because at the end of the day I think kids are listening to more kids instead of the adults,” he added.

Some might question how someone so young could have enough life experience to be a motivational speaker, but Demarjay says you have to block the negative voices.

“That’s what I call the dream stealers,” he said. “Those are the people who want to take it from you.”

Smith everyone to keep these phrases in their mind at all times

“‘Be the shark of the ocean.’ ‘Strength no weakness’ and ‘believe it.’”
