COMMERCE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WXYZ) - A metro Detroit doctor is offering a $20,000 weight loss surgery for free!
Dr. Matthew Weiner, who is with the Michigan Weight Management Institute, is teaming up with DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital to perform one free bariatric surgery.
"We're going to help one person, but our goals are much greater than that," said Weiner. "Our goals are to draw attention to obesity as a disease."
The surgeon says weight loss procedures are severely undercovered in Michigan by insurance companies. "If a health insurance policy denied you access to high blood pressure care or cancer care, there would be outrage," Weiner said.
Applicants must have Body Mass Index (BMI) between 35-39 and suffer from a weight-related disease (such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or sleep apnea) or have a BMI greater than 40. Applicants are also required to write an essay. Three finalists will be evaluate, and one will ultimately receive the treatment.
