Remember the movie Homeward Bound? Pets against all odds found their way home to their owners.

Well, a similar story played out yesterday in Royal Oak.

A woman was hit by a car as she walked with her two dogs to a pet salon. As she laid in the street, injured, at Fourth Street and South Main on Monday morning, she held on tight to her dog Lola who suffered a broken tail,  and watched helpless as her other dog Henry ran from the scene to her parked car.

“There was a woman who stopped when I got hit. She asked if I was okay. I said don’t worry about me just grab my dog,” said the victim of the accident.

The Good Samaritan went after the dog, who ran, in fear of a stranger.

But the woman who stopped to help didn’t give up. She got in her car and followed the dog.  A short time later, the woman who was hurt got a phone call.

“She said, I found your dog. He is on this corner,” she said.

Turns out, Henry ran from a place he had never walked to, all the way home.

Now, he is with his owner, suffering only from raw paws from that long run home.

“As cheesy as it sounds, I think he came home to find help,” said the grateful dog owner. “I am surprised, but also not surprised. He is a loving pup.”

Royal Oak police say the investigation into the accident is complete. The driver who hit this dog owner was found at fault and issued a violation for failing to yield to a pedestrian.

Alcohol was not a factor.
