Dr. Farid Fata pleads not guilty to Health Care Fraud charge in federal court

DETROIT (WXYZ) - The doctor accused of unnecessarily giving patients chemotherapy and other treatments says he didn't do it.

Only 7 Action News was in the courtroom as Dr. Farid Fata pleaded not guilty to one count of felony healthcare fraud in federal court Monday afternoon.

U.S. prosecutors say the Oakland County doctor deliberately misdiagnosed and mistreated patients to fraudulently run up a $35 million Medicare bill.

Fata, 48, was arrested two weeks ago after federal agents raided his Oakland Township home and several offices. Fata owns and operates Michigan Hematology Oncology.

The felony charge can carry a 10-year sentence, 20-year sentence, or life if the fraud caused death.

Fata is currently being held in the Wayne County Jail on a $9-million bond.
