Madison Heights Police are warning of potentially illegal activity after multiple people reported receiving a flyer advertising painting address numbers on the curb this week.

The flyer said the person was endorsed by St. Clair Shores police and that, on a certain date, he will be painting address numbers on the curbs of those who want it to raise funds for his niece's tuition expenses.

The flyer was distributed in multiple neighborhoods.

“The person soliciting this service has not applied for a permit to conduct door-to-door business and thus has not been vetted by the Madison Heights Police Department or any other City department. If this person was to apply for a permit, they would be denied, as the curb is City property,” Madison Heights writes on their Facebook page.

Todd Tanner said he saw the man passing flyers, but thought nothing of it.

“A guy just walking through here, just placing some pieces of paper in the different mailboxes, behind the mailbox. I just thought it was a canvasser,” Tanner said.

Tanner said he’s happy police have looked into this because there are a lot of elderly in his neighborhood who may have fallen for this.

“There are some elderly and a good amount of people who aren’t tuned into what’s going on in the world, most stuff. They’d probably fall prey to that," Tanner said.
