Novi elementary school principal suspended after police arrest her for being drunk in school lot

NOVI, Mich. (WXYZ) - The principal of Novi's Deerfield Elementary School has been suspended after, officials say, she was taken into police custody on suspicion of drunk driving .

The superintendent says Kim Warren was found in her car on school property on Monday afternoon. The 44-year-old Warren was released Monday evening, pending review by the Novi City Prosecutor.

"She could face charges under the city's 'super drunk' ordinance due to a high blood alcohol content,"  says Novi Director of Public Safety David Molloy. "Next steps involve preparing the case for review by our city prosecutor Phil Seymour."

"This is an unfortunate set of circumstances and out of character" for her, says Steve Matthews, Superintendent of Novi Community Schools.

Police say they received two calls from concerned motorist about Warren's driving on nearby Wixom Road. Warren was arrested shortly after 2:00 pm.

She has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the case.

Dear Parents and Guardians of Deerfield Elementary Students:

I am saddened that I must inform you of a recent incident involving Ms. Kim Warren,Principal of Deerfield Elementary. I was made aware yesterday afternoon that Ms. Warren was taken into custody by the Novi Police on Monday afternoon because she was found in her car on school property and suspected of being intoxicated. On Monday evening Ms. Warren was released pending review by the Novi city prosecutor

.I want to assure you that at no time yesterday did Ms. Warren enter the building or come in contact with the children or staff of Deerfield Elementary while intoxicated. This is an unfortunate set of circumstances and out of character for Ms. Warren. Up until this event Ms. Warren has served the Deerfield Community and our district well. Pending resolution of her employment status, Ms. Warren has been placed on paid administrative leave.

As we move forward Mrs. Lisa Fenchel, longtime Principal at Novi Meadows, has agreed to serve as Interim Principal at Deerfield Elementary and will begin serving the students and staff first thing tomorrow morning (Wednesday, April 10th).

Additionally, we will have counselors and social workers available to assist your students and our staff, as needed. I have great confidence in Mrs. Fenchel and the staff of Deerfield Elementary. If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me.
