The Department of Environmental Equality announced the Oakland County Health Division is expected to receive nearly $125,000 that will go towards a new rapid testing method for beaches.

The money raised came from state, local and federal funding.

Right now it takes days for bacteria samples.

The new method will provide same-day testing and results within hours.

It can also measure the source of the contamination. This would allow the health department to know what’s causing the bacteria so they could handle the problem.

“As we have done for over 30 years, Oakland County is again testing beaches. During the 2017 season, 75 public and semi-public beaches are being sampled weekly. In addition, we are collecting samples to validate a new technology that we hope to use in the future,” the health division says.

Macomb and Wayne County received funding for new testing as well.
