Mayor of Rochester Hills, Bryan Barnett, traveled to the Texas border with multiple other city mayors to protest separation children from families. At a press conference on Thursday, the mayors spoke out about a need for policy change.

“We need to find a better balance between our respect for the rule of law and the importance of human decency and compassion

as it relates to separating families,” Barnett said.

The mayors went as part of the U.S. Conference of Mayors. The group is calling for the Trump Administration to immediately reverse the family separation policy.

“The reason we were here was not to gain access to the facility,” Barnett said. “It was basically to encourage congress to begin to move that in our cities, Rochester hills and other place around the country this discussion about immigration is important.”

The group says they do feel encouraged by the presidents recent actions regarding immigration.

“We hope that the presidents executive order yesterday will begin to change things in reuniting the people that were already separated.

There’s a lot of discussion and this is really a moving target,” Barnett said.
