An 18-year-old Oxford school district student is in police custody after, police say, he tried to disarm an Oakland County Sheriff's Department deputy.
The deputy was attempting to take the student into custody at the time. The gun went off as the teen tried to grab for it. The round went through the bottom of the holster, striking the floor and then lodging in a nearby interior wall.
It happened around 4:10 p.m.
Police say the teen was being taken into custody after assaulting his girlfriend at Oxford High School. The teen, who is an online student at the school, has school privileges but he also has a written agreement to stay away from his girlfriend due to "stalking type issues."
Police say he was detained by a school administrator, and struck a teacher with a closed fist as he was being taken to the front office.
School district officials revealed the incident in a letter to parents.
No one was injured in the incident.
Officials say that school will be held as normal on Wednesday.
The investigation is ongoing.
The teen was taken to a local hospital for treatment of a pre-existing medical condition and released. He has been taken to the Oakland County Jail, where he is being held on possible charges of Domestic Violence, attempting to disarm a Police Officer and Resist and Obstructing a police officer.
He is expected to be arraigned Wednesday.
