Kids out of school for the summer break can get easily bored, only involved in their friends, their cellphone, and their interests.
If you’re a parent, you’re always looking for ways to keep them busy. The students of two teachers in Milford are learning life lessons.
Terry Haren is the Physical Education Teacher at Oak Valley Middle School who says, “I started the group a couple of years ago thinking the kids had a lack of leadership. They want it to be the cool kids club. It started with 12. They get to invite a kid each week. It’s grown to 85.”
Some of these sixth to 8th-grade kids have been involved for both years. They get to mingle with friends, make new friends and learn a leadership and work ethic.
Kathy Lukes is the Math Teacher who uses a social media cell phone app to notify the kids when there’s a request for a community project.
“These kids never say no to anything. They will do whatever we ask,” Lukes said.
Kelly Davenport brought her daughter and son to Milford Central Park to help paint it.
She says, “I give them chores at home. I don’t want a kid who doesn’t want to work later. I think it’s great. It gets them moving and doing something physical they typically wouldn’t do.”
These are not just summer projects for this group. They do these all year long.
