The Troy Police Department has been using humor to get serious announcements noticed.

From funny memes to GIFs, they are tweeting jokes, hoping people are paying attention to the messages.

Troy police got some attention using Lean Cuisines as a way to deter DUIs.

"It's definitely not what you want to be eating on Thanksgiving," said Sgt. Meghan Lehman of Troy Police.

Troy Police tweeted a funny message with a meme:

Troy police are using humor on social media for a serious reason.

"We want people to see the messages and if it takes humor to do it, than that's what we are going to do."

Ever since they started posting creative or funny tweets, the number of their Twitter followers have gone up.

This week, they tweeted warnings about fighting over parking spots, providing alcohol to minors and drunk driving.

She added, "Not where you want to be, in jail, on Thanksgiving."

Starting tonight, they will have extra officers on the roads, looking for drunk drivers.

"Sometimes people will over do it as far as drinking goes. It's probably our biggest arrest on Thanksgiving," Sgt. Lehman.

If you like the tweet about Lean Cuisines, stay tuned.

They have more funny posts for Christmas.

"We are going to do 25 days of Christmas, so we will have a different message everyday, public safety oriented, but also with some humor."

They say most followers enjoy the funny posts.

"They want to know we are people," Sgt. Lehman explained. "They want to know we have fun doing our job, but there is a serious part of it too. Sometimes, putting a humorous spin on things helps us get that more serious message out there."
