The Waterford Township Board of Trustees passed a resolution against allowing Syrian refugees to settle in the area on Monday night.

The resolution was against a federal resettlement program for the refugees. It passed with a 7-0 vote.

The controversial decision prompted local leaders to voice their feelings on a critical issue also discussed by both presidential candidates. A large crowd of residents also voiced their opinions on the issue as well at the meeting.

Leaders ultimately said they're open to allowing refugees, but not until the process can be perfected to ensure those coming into our country are adequately vetted.

Right now, thousands have requested to come to Michigan, and records show our state leads the nation in taking in Syrian refugees.

The vote was symbolic, as the federal government does maintain jurisdiction over the program.
